A wildcat well on the edge of the giant Johan Sverdrup field has been abandoned after revealing only a small oil find.
Lundin Petroleum revealed partner Statoil had found a 15m oil zone with ‘poor production characteristics’ which was not linked to the main Johan Sverdrup field.
The well, on the west of the boundary fault of the discovery onto the southern Utsira basement, was drilled to a depth of 1948m by the semi-submerisble rig Ocean Vanguard.
Last month the Cliffhanger South and North prospects, near the massive 3.3billion boe field, came up dry, which Statoil warned would limit the upside potential of Sverdrup.
