Scotland’s largest council could set up its own energy company in a bid to cut fuel poverty and drive renewable energy projects.
Officials from Glasgow City Council are looking at different ways the authority could create its own energy services company.
The proposed scheme would see the council partner with the private sector to drive renewable projects and create jobs in the city, along with generating energy to power public buildings and services, with spare capacity sold to the National Grid.
“Such a project could provide social, economic and environmental benefits for the city,” said Glasgow City Council leader councillor Gordon Matheson.
“Last year, the council’s energy bill was almost £26 million. This scheme could generate significant savings which could be used to help vulnerable city residents struggling to pay their fuel bills.
“Setting up a company could also help protect the council against future energy price rises and jobs would be created as new renewables projects were installed.”
