Plans to build new North Sea headquarters for EnQuest have been backed by council planners.
Drum Property Group hopes to redevelop the derelict Aberdeen Seafood Park, next to Union Square, on behalf of the firm.
The proposed office space is approximately 120,000 sq ft over eight storeys. It is bounded by Palmerston Road, Raik road, Poynernook Road and Stell Road.
Dr Margaret Bochel, head of planning and infrastructure services, said: “The proposal is considered to comply with many of the objectives of the structure plan and national planning policy.
“Most notably, in terms of economic development, implementation of the proposal would build on recent commercial redevelopment in the immediate area and potentially act as a catalyst for the regeneration of an area historically dominated by the declining fish processing industry.”
Drum Director, Graeme Bone, said: “Our proposals will also lead to the physical regeneration of a neglected and rundown area of the city and in addition act as a catalyst in generating additional long term economic activity for the harbour area and the city in general.”
EnQuest will become owners of the building, which will provide accommodation for up to 800 personnel, on completion in late 2014. It is the largest UK independent oil producer in the UK North Sea and currently employs around 500 people at two locations in Aberdeen.
The firm’s David Heslop said: “This is in an ideal location in the heart of the city and will serve to support our future growth plans.”
Councillors on the development management sub-committee will rule on the plans earmarked for regeneration on Thursday.
