BP says it has made a ‘significant’ gas find in Egypt after drilling the deepest well in the Nile Delta.
The site, which revealed a 38m net play of gas and condensate, came after the Salamat well was drilled to around 7,000m by the Maersk Discoverer.
The well is the first to be drilled in BP’s East Nile Delta exploration programme, and sits around 75km north of Damietta city.
BP said further appraisal was needed to for the find, but it boosted hopes of further major finds in the Nile Delta, with the new find set to be tied back to the Temsah development.
“Success with Salamat proves hydrocarbons in the centre of a 50-km long structure,” said BP exporation vice president Mike Daly.
“With a hydrocarbon column in excess of 180 metres, the discovery increases our confidence in the materiality of the deep Oligocene play in the East Nile Delta.”
