Aberdeen is the best place in the UK bar London for hotel room rate and occupancy levels, a new report shows.
In its latest snapshot of the UK market, professional service firm PwC said the Granite City beat all other cities – except the capital – for the second year running in the first six months of 2013.
PwC surveyed 22 cities, including Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow but not Inverness.
It said a combination of summer sunshine, greater business confidence and a steady economic recovery had helped boost growth in the sector in Scotland.
Average daily room rates in the three Scottish cities were higher than the UK regional average of £58, with Aberdeen hotels achieving a 10% year-on-year increase to £86.
PwC said that big events taking place north of the border next year, including the Commonwealth Games, Ryder Cup golf tournament and Homecoming Scotland, meant the outlook for the next 12 months was bright.
Jason McBurnie, corporate finance director and consumer and leisure specialist at PwC in Scotland, said: “2014 promises to be an important and exciting year for hoteliers in Scotland.”
PwC counted 73 hotels in Aberdeen, mostly in the three and four-star categories, with as many as 20 more in the pipeline.
The report said the buoyant oil and gas industry was driving economic success in he north-east, adding: “The first half of 2013 has seen the Aberdeen hotel market boom.
“Indeed, the total investment committed or in progress on the UK Continental Shelf in 2012 was £31billion – up 22% since 2010, which is a continuing positive sign for service providers in Aberdeen area, including hoteliers.”
