A tiny bat has been flown back to Norway by helicopter after being found on a North Sea oil rig.
The exhausted troll bat, which has a wingspan of 20cm, was found on the Ekofisk platform by oil workers, who contacted the country’s zoological society.
The bat, nicknamed Punky by workers on the rig, spent a week in the North Sea platform before being flown by helicopter to Stavanger, where he was taken to a sanctuary by one of the society’s members.
“He’s a troll bat, which is a rather rare species in Norway,” the society’s Ebbe Nyfors, who helped nurse the bat back to health, told Aftenbladet.
“He was quite weak after having been long without food, including a week at the platform, but he has recovered well.”
Punky was kept in a tupperware box, and allowed out to fly briefly in Mr Nyfors’ bathroom at night as he built his strength.
The six gram bat was finally released to the wild earlier this week.
