Energy companies in the Gulf of Mexico started curbing production and evacuating offshore workers ahead of the expected tropical storm blow.
Karen, the first cyclone to approach the US coast this year, is forecast to move across the Gulf’s oil installations before hitting the mainland between Louisiana and the Florida Panhandle.
It was moving at top winds of 65 mph towards north-northwest and was expected to strengthen to just below hurricane strength by late Friday, the US National Hurricane Center said.
Exxon Mobil and Anadarko Petroleum have cut down production ahead of the blow while BP, Chevron and Shell are among companies who evacuated workers from installations located on the cyclone’s path.
