The Junior Saltire Challenge for 2014, which is open to all schools in Scotland, is to design, build and test a simple water-powered generator.
Hydrokinetic devices use the energy in flowing river streams, tidal currents or artificial water channels as a source of renewable power. The style of the devices can vary considerably, for example paddlewheels, flapping devices, horizontal axis or vertical axis devices. Tidal stream energy is electricity generated from the movement of tidal flows. Working in teams of up to four, the project should involve the pupils in carrying out research, prior to constructing and testing out their design ideas.
Teams are then invited to submit their ideas and evidence of their project work to skills development Scotland. Three entries in each age group will be short-listed to participate in the final stages of the judging
