Gavin struggled to find employment for nine months before taking part in the Get into Oil and Gas course.
W ith many of his family members working in the oil and gas industry, Gavin was eager to join but struggled to get a first foot on the career ladder.
He said: “I had gone to college for two years, studying electronics but couldn’t get a job. At first I had a few interviews, then it got to a point where I was sending out CVs and getting no reply. It became very discouraging and a wee bit depressing.”
Gavin worked on his grandfather’s fishing boat during his job search, still eager to create a career for himself.
“I saw an advert for Get into Oil and Gas in the newspaper,” he said. “I had always been interested in the oil and gas industry but couldn’t get a start in it. I really enjoyed the course. It gave me an insight into all the different parts of the industry. I would never have got that experience anywhere else.”
The course also gave Gavin a chance to use his electronics expertise during training and his experience with Eurocopter, impressing the company so much he received some excellent news a few weeks later.
“I found out I had got a job with Eurocopter at our celebration ceremony for completing the course.” Gavin said. “I’d just given a presentation about what I had got from the course and my mentor at Eurocopter told me I had got the job. I was smiling from ear to ear, I was on cloud nine.
“Now I just want to progress in my career and move up the ladder. I want to go as far as I can in this industry.”
“To anyone who is considering the course, I would say just go for it, go out and show what you can do and never stop trying. If you keep going you’ll get somewhere.”
