A project aimed at developing sporting activities among Aberdeen school children has secured funding for the next five years.
The Saltire Sports for Schools Project, launched by the Portlethen-based firm Saltire Energy in 2009, has targeted children from five local primary schools in a bid to increase physical education among youngsters.
As part of the scheme, around 2000 pupils have participated in a variety of sports at Aberdeen Sports Village, as well as a range of inter-school tournaments.
Saltire has so far invested £500,000 in the project and expects to contribute around £50,000 a year until the end of the extended funding agreement in 2018.
“Our funding commitment for the Saltire Sports for Schools Project aims to encourage youngsters to stay active and enable them to engage in activities to which they might not normally have been exposed,” said Mike Loggie, chief executive at Saltire Energy.
Aberdeen Sports Village chief executive David Beattie said that the scheme gives children the chance to take part in sports they may not have otherwise had the chance to experience.
“Many of the children involved have not had the opportunity to try sport of any description, this underlines just how important the project is in giving all children the chance to enjoy sporting activities of all types,” Beattie said.
