A new £5million solar farm is to be built at the Goonhilly Downs windfarm in Cornwall.
The site, near the famous satellite earth station, will see the company’s first ground-mounted solar scheme being developed.
Last month Renewable Energy Generation sold off the windfarm to a fund managed by BackRock for more than £25million, but will continue to manage operations at the site.
The company has struck a deal with juwi Renewable Energies Limited to develop the project, which will generate up to 5.5Gwh of energy a year.
The site is expected to be completed by early 2014 and will use the existing grid connections from the windfarm.
“We have been looking into the merits of leveraging our existing grid connections for some time and we are excited at the opportunity to operate the project alongside the existing Goonhilly Downs wind farm,” said REG chief executive Andrew Whalley.
“With juwi as our EPC contractor and long-term O&M provider, REG has access to years’ of experience in the solar sector from which to draw upon.”
