A project to develop a small hydro-electric scheme on Mull has launched an appeal to raise £1million.
Sustainable Mull and Mull and Iona Community Trust, a development agency, is spearheading the project to raise funds to build a hydro scheme on the Allt Achadh na Moine watercourse on the east coast of Mull.
It is estimated the scheme will generate more than 1,100MWh a year for up to 40 years.
Construction is expected to start next spring, with the scheme operational by the end of 2014.
The project will be built and operated by a newly formed a co-operative, Green Energy Mull, with profits benefiting local island charitable, environmental and education projects.
Investors may also be eligible for tax relief on their investments through the government’s Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS) and Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme (SEIS).
Each share costs £50 with a minimum investment of £250 required.
