Plans for developing the Blackbird North Sea field with a new production well have been given the go-ahead by authorities.
The field, around 120km north-east of Aberdeen, was brought into production two years ago and is thought to contain up to 22million barrels of oil.
Revised plans for the field, which is owned by Nexen, to allow for the drilling of a second production well have now been approved by the Department for Energy and Climate Change.
The new well, which will be drilled early next year, is due to start production by mid-2014, with the investment in the well set to qualify for brown field tax allowance.
Full production will allow the field, which is tied back to the Aoka Mizu FPSO also serving the Ettrick field, to reach around 15,000 barrels of oil per day, along with six million cubic feet of gas per day which is transported to the St Fergus plant.
