Shell says it has developed a new type of diesel which it claims can protect engines from frost and snow.
The oil giant has launched Shell Diesel FiT (Fuel injection Technology) at more than 60 stations in America.
The pilot, which could then see the fuel rolled out across the globe, is a response to the soaring popularity of diesel cars around the world.
“Shell knows that motorists are increasingly choosing diesel engines for the improved power, durability, and fuel economy that diesel vehicles provide over petrol vehicles, so we developed a higher-quality diesel to meet their specific engine needs,” said Jim Macias, a senior fuels technology manager for Shell.
The new formulation provides three-way protection to guard against performance-robbing gunk build-up on fuel injectors, and provides enhanced anti-corrosion and anti-wear protection.
In very cold weather conditions, low-quality diesel fuel can “gel” which can result in the inability to start the vehicle or reduce diesel engine performance.
New Shell Diesel FiT is said to contain anti-gelling agents to ensure engines perform as designed. Mr Macias added: “With the reality of more diesel engines coming to market for consumers and more diesel options expected from auto-makers in the future, Shell is responding by offering this high-quality diesel fuel to help customers maintain the performance and protect the investment they have made in their diesel vehicle.”
