Lundin Petroleum has begun drilling of an appraisal well in the Johan Sverdrup discovery in the Norwegian North Sea.
The 16/3-8S well in PL501 licence, the eastern part of the discovery, is looking to establish the depth, quality and thickness of Permian and Jurassic reservoirs 3.9 kilometres south-east of the discovery well 16/2-6.
The planned total depth is approximately 2,025 metres below sea level and the well will be drilled using the semi-submersible drilling rig Bredford Dolphin.
The drilling is expected to take approximately 45 days.
Lundin Petroleum is the operator of PL501 with 40% interest; Statoil owns 40% and Maersk 20%.
