New figures suggesting the number of women entering the oil and gas industry is set to rise by more than 40% have been welcomed by campaigners.
A recent survey found that pay rates for women were expected to increase by 60% over the next year, compared to a rise of less than 20% four years ago.
Hiring trends were found to indicate an increase of more than 40% of women entering the industry, with more applying for engineering, administration and marketing roles – among others – than before.
The findings were welcomed by campaigning group Women In Science and Engineering, which has been looking to raise awareness of STEM industry jobs.

“It is great to read that there is an increase of female candidates registering their interest in oil and gas careers, and particularly that younger women are engaging with the industry,” said director Helen Wollaston.
“Most girls when they are at school don’t realise how many exciting opportunities are available in oil and gas to those with the right qualifications.”
“Creativity, communication and problem solving – which women tend to be good at – are critically important in science and engineering, not to mention the fact that you can earn good money.”
