Oil and gas workers are being encouraged to report any incidents to ensure continued safety improvements in the industry.
Steve Bullock – a co-chair at industry safety body Step Change in Safety – is calling on everyone in the industry to report near misses, safety breaches and incidents.
Speaking at an Energy Institute event in Aberdeen this week, Mr Bullock said the body was disappointed by uptake of its online incidents reporting database, previously known as SADIE.
“Every time we have a hydrocarbon release, for example, we should have a record,” said Mr Bullock who is senior vice president for HSSEIA Offshore Projects and Operations at Petrofac.
“We cannot force people to do it but we are encouraging people to do it for the right reasons. If we can get the right quality of data we can provide more guidance and understand what the threats are.”
He said the industry had come a long way since it launched Step Change in 1997 but it was an ongoing process.
A key issue, according to Bullock, is the culture surrounding procedures.
“Why is it we cannot follow our own procedures?,” he asked. “Is it because they are 100 pages thick when they could be two pages thick?
“Our culture is much less disciplined with procedures, so that’s a challenge for us getting back to basics.”
