BP has kicked off production at the West Chirag platform as Azerbaijan looks to increase its oil output.
The oil giant confirmed production had begun at a rate of around 6,000 barrels per day, with the company targeting 60,000 barrels of oil per day from the Caspian facility by the end of the year.
The West Chirag platform is the final part of the $6billion Chirag Oil Project development, aimed at increasing output from the Azeri field.
Oil from the field will pass through new processing facilities on the platform before being piped to Sangachal Terminal through a new pipeline linked to existing subsea infrastructure
“To date the ACG field has produced over 2.3 billion barrels of oil and with future continual major investments in new technologies and facilities, like the one we have today started up, it will continue to produce as a world-class reservoir for many decades,” said BP’s regional president, Gordon Birrell.
“We believe COP represents a big step forward towards stabilizing ACG’s production and increasing recovery by drilling more wells from the new West Chirag facility.”
