Scotland’s ambitious renewables targets will allow Aberdeen to maintain its status as the energy capital of Europe, even when the oil levels begin to decline, claims a renewables champion for the city’s energy group.
Iain Todd, of AREG, told Enegy Voice that as Scotland is looking to source 100% of its electricity needs from renewable means by 2020, it will be able to decrease its reliance on fossil fuels for power production.
“The reason the city council set up AREG ten years ago was precisely for this point: Aberdeen did not want to be just oil and gas city, it wanted to be an all-energy city, it wanted to use its expertise in renewable energy… and everything that has happened since has confirmed that was a very wise decision to make,” Todd said.
“If renewables achieves everything that we want we will need less fossil fuel for power generation.
“Aberdeen has a very healthy future in oil and gas but with such a valuable chemical, why just burn it, when you can make electricity from sustainable resources?”
Todd added the group supports the idea of community-owned renewables’ projects, but input from big international companies was necessary to drive the sector’s development forward.
