The “biggest technology brains on the planet” are set to gather in Aberdeen next week to discuss ways of maximising potential of the UK Continental Shelf.
The annual ITF Technology Showcase will gather senior industry speakers, technology innovators and government officials to talk about the challenges facing the UK oil and gas industry following radical new proposals to turn around the fortunes of the declining North Sea.
The Wood Review, published earlier this week, highlighted that implementation of new technologies will be a major step in recovering the estimated 24billion barrels of oil still locked in the UK North Sea.
For the first time this year the event has gained official industry backing with Oil & Gas UK and the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) becoming the conference and exhibition’s supporters.
“There was a broad understanding that we needed to both improve our knowledge and understanding of what technologies are needed in the North Sea but also to work more closely with organisations such as ITF and ensure that when they run events they are well supported by the industry,” Oonagh Werngren, operations director at Oil & Gas UK commented on the body’s participation.
“People tend to think of technology as something that you push a button and it happens. Well, we’re talking about big engineering projects that take phenomenal ingenuity and some of the biggest brains on the planet in order to unlock some of the challenges that we have in this industry.
“Anyone of these has the potential to save companies millions or to enable significant production in the future – and that’s what’s exciting about it.”
The ITF Technology Showcase 2014 will take place at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre on March 5 and registration is available via the event’s website.
