The chairman of maritime classification group Lloyd’s Register has been named as the new boss of energy group Dong.
Thomas Thune Andersen, who has been chairman of Lloyd’s Register for almost four years, is set to be elected as chairman of the Danish firm this summer.
His election to the post will wait, however, until he has resigned from the board of SSE, where he is a director, as the two firms have a standing partnership covering wind energy.
“This takes place at the general meeting at SSE on 17 July 2014, after which Thomas Thune Andersen at the earliest possible date will be elected chairman on an extraordinary general meeting,” said a spokesman for Dong.
“Thomas Thune Andersen has many years of experience from the energy sector and has seats on the boards of a number of international companies dealing in energy, logistics and distribution.
In the interim, Benny Loft will be named chairman of Dong at their AGM tomorrow to oversee the transition.
Dong has a number of key energy projects, including eight West of Shetland oil projects and more than a dozen offshore wind developments including the world’s largest – the London Array.
Andersen, who originally comes from Denmark, was chief executive of Maersk Oil from 2004 to 2009, and has overseen the safety committee at SSE since joining its board five years ago. He is also chairman of oilfield services group DeepOcean and a non-executive board member of Petrofac, along with chairing the British Chamber of Commerce in his native country.
“I would like to congratulate Thomas on his appointment at Dong Energy,” said SSE chairman Lord SMith of Kelvin.
“It is a major company in his native Denmark and beyond and, sorry though I am that he will be leaving the board, I fully support his decision to take up this significant opportunity and wish him well.”
