Operations has been suspended on a Gulf of Mexico rig after a giant wave struck it and left it damaged yesterday.
The Ensco 8506 semi-submersible rig, which sits around 130miles off the coast of Texas, was struck by 12-foot high waves which started flooding one of the platform’s legs.
However, Coast Guard officials have decided not to evacuate the 116 crew from the platform, which is pumping out water and has been stabilised.
“The rig is maintaining an even keel and remains in a stable position without resorting to using the emergency pumps, or performing an emergency disconnect from the riser,” the Coast Guard said.
“There are no reports of injuries or pollution.”
