Statoil confirmed it will permanently plug and abandon its wildcat well.
The exploration and production company discovered the well about 15km southwest of the Johan Castberg discovery in the Barents Sea.
The firm used the well, which was drilled to a depth of 2029 metres (6656ft), to prove there was petroleum in the reservoir rocks in the Middle, Jurassic and Late Triassic age.
The firm recovered a 68-metre gross gas column in the Stø formation and an 86-metre gross oil column in the Stø and Nordmela formations.
Early calculations estimate the size of the discovery to be between seven and 10million cubic metres of recoverable oil equivalents.
The wildcat is the seventh well drilled under the production licence 532.
