Leni Oil & Gas has confirmed its Gourdron field in Trinidad resulted in a hydrocarbon find.
More than 350ft of hydrocarbon-bearing sands were recovered, according to the firm.
Last month, the Caribbean-focused explorer was given the go-ahead to begin drilling the first new well in the Gourdron oil field for 30 years.
Chief executive Neil Ritson heralded the discovery an ‘excellent start’ to the firm’s bid to unlock 122million barrels of oil from the field.
He said: “The presence of oil bearing Goudron Sands, whilst expected at this location, is very encouraging and the production potential of an interval of this thickness is already well established.
“GY-664 will now continue to test the full extent of the Goudron Sands and then be deepened to the Gros Morne and Lower Cruse in order to confirm significant additional reservoir potential. This is an excellent start as we begin to unlock the 122 million barrels of proven and probable oil still in the field.”
