Maersk Training has launched a new course focusing on the air emergency breathing system ahead of the change in helicopter safety regulations on September 1.
The Opito-approved compressed air emergency breathing system (CA-EBS) initial deployment training will cover safe checks, deployment and use of the new Category A EBS units, and will launch in July at Maersk training centres in Aberdeen, Newcastle and individual customers’ facilities.
The new apparatus is set to allow the user to breathe clean air as opposed to the existing re-breather systems – in line with the recommendations of the Civil Aviation Authority published in a report earlier this year.
The new course will become an industry requirement in addition to the current BOSIET, FOET and HUET certification for personnel travelling offshore by helicopter to the UKCS from September this year.
“Everyone operating in the industry welcomes increased safety standards, especially for personnel being transferred by helicopter,” said Stuart Cameron, UK managing director of Maersk Training.
“We have no doubt that this new breathing system can only enhance the potential for survival should an accident at sea occur.
“As of mid-July 2014 we will be running up to twelve of the 1.5 hour courses per day Monday to Friday and up to eight per day, on Saturday and Sunday. Each course is limited to a maximum of 20 delegates as defined in the Opito standard.”
