The £1.6billion West of Duddon Sands offshore wind farm achieved its full power output two months ahead of schedule.
The development, which can power more than 250,000 homes, was officially opened by UK Energy Secretary Ed Davey today.
Denmark’s Dong Energy and Spain’s Iberdrola’s Scottish Power unit were joint developers on the scheme.
Davey said: “This wind farm will generate enough clean electricity to power more than 250,000 homes and give the local economy a major and sustained boost.
“We want an energy mix that is built on diverse, home grown sources to make sure our supplies are clean and secure. Wind has a huge role to play.”
Currently the UK has installed more than half of the world’s offshore wind capacity.
It’s hoped the power of wind will play a critical role in hitting European carbon reduction targets.
