Aberdeen firm Hydro Group has been chosen to carry out cable repairs and to design and develop undersea infrastructure for Canada’s Department of National Defence.
The Bridge of Don company did not reveal exactly how much its latest contract was worth but it is a six-figure sum.
Hydro Group, which designs and manufactures cables and connectors for subsea and onshore use, has previously carried out work for Canada’s armed forces.
Last year, it repaired a submerged sensor network that was out of service due to a damaged cable forming part of a navy installation in Victoria, British Columbia.
Jim Pedersen, an electrical engineer with a key role in the Canadian navy, said: “We are delighted to be working with a supplier that can provide a product and service that meets the demanding needs of our undersea range sensor networks…in harsh subsea conditions.”
Hydro Group, comprising Hydro Bond Engineering and Hydro Cable Systems, employs about 100 people.
The company is led by managing director Doug Whyte, who established Hydro Bond Engineering in 1982.
More than 30 years on, the group now serves the energy and defence industries, with projects including work on submarine platforms and acoustic ranges for navies around the world.
Its oil and gas customers include blue chip and major operators and contractors in both domestic and international subsea markets.
Earlier this year, the group said it was on track to meet its turnover target of £8.5million for 2014.
The business had previously reported a significant increase in work from the subsea sector, resulting in a 12% rise in comparable turnover to £7.1million in 2013.
