Fresh pressure on energy stocks failed to derail the FTSE 100 Index today, even as oil prices slid further away from the $50 a barrel mark.
BP was 1.9p lower at 396.6p and Royal Dutch Shell dipped 15p to 2145p but the top flight index clung to positive territory – up 24.6 points at 6525.6.
Big risers included aerospace engineering giant GKN, which climbed 9.15p to 346.9p, and advertising company WPP with a gain of 20.5p to 1378.5p.
Energy companies SSE and Centrica were among the leading fallers after Labour leader Ed Miliband said energy regulator Ofgem should be given new powers to force firms to cut gas and electricity bills.
SSE fell by 2% or 34.5p to 1560.5p and Centrica dropped 4.2p to 264.6p.
