The chief executive of BG Group said he welcomed the takeover bid by oil major Shell with “mixed emotions”.
The deal, was announced just months after former Statoil boss Helge Lund, took up his new role.
Lund said there was still work to be done before the deal would be finalised.
He said:”This is a strong deal for our shareholders. That said, you will understand that, from a leadership perspective, I do have slightly mixed emotions as I was looking forward to taking BG forward and a takeover was certainly not in my mind when I joined the company.”
Shareholders at the company’s annual general meeting also showed their discontent for Lund’s potential pay, which could be as high as $47.8million if the deal with Shell goes ahead.
A total of 18% rejected BG’s renumeration report at the meeting.
The takeover by Shell was announced last month, after an initial phone call between Shell chief executive Ben Van Beurden and BG chairman Andrew Gould.
