Energy firm GE Oil and Gas today announced plans to cut jobs at its facility in Peterhead due to low oil prices.
GE employs about 130 people at the base, where components used in the oil and gas industry are made.
The firm, which also has operations in Aberdeen and Montrose, did not specify the exact number of staff members it intends to lay off, or the amount of money it expects to save as a result of the measure.
A spokesman for GE said the company will carry out a 45-day consultation with affected staff members, who they say will receive support and advice.
The spokesman said: “As a result of increasingly challenging market conditions, today we are announcing proposals to implement workforce reductions at GE’s pressure control supply chain facility in Peterhead.
“This proposal is not something that we take lightly, but we believe that it is the right approach for the long-term health of the business.
“Before any final decision is taken regarding the implementation of this proposal, the company is fully committed to engaging in formal consultation for a minimum period of 45 days.
“We remain committed to continuing an open dialogue with our workforce and to providing information and advice to support our employees.”
The announcement comes after helicopter operator CHC announced it was in consultation with staff over jobs earlier this week.
The company said it had moved into discussion with employees in a bid to streamline costs.
A number of positions are likely to be affected including pilots, engineering and support staff.
Last month Bristow announced it was in consultation over job reductions.
