Marathon Oil has been hit with an improvement notice by the HSE (Health and Safety Executive) after a gas leak on its Brae Alpha installation in the North Sea.
The company will have until April next year to comply with the notice following the incident 170 miles north east of Aberdeen.
The leak happened in June inside the West Brae Caisson on the installation.
A notice from the HSE said there were not measures put in place to carry out inspection of the three inch riser base gas lift which caused corrosion and “eventually led” to the hydrocarbon leak.
It added: “The West Brae caisson also contains the 6” West Brae Gas Lift riser, PL1442.1R, which is operating beyond its design life and apart from a visual inspection there is insufficient
information to ensure that the riser has been maintained in an efficient state, in efficient working order and in good repair, thus putting the health and safety of individuals on the platform at risk.”
Earlier this month, oil major Shell was handed an improvement notice over a North Sea gas leak.
The company launched an investigation in January this year after a suspected gas leak near to the Curlew FPSO(Floating, Production, Storage and Offloading) vessel in the North Sea.
