The former Chief Secretary to the Treasury Sir Danny Alexander is set to take up a new role in China.
The 43-year-old, who lost his Inverness seat in the UK general election last year, has been nominated to take up a vice-presidential role at the Asian Infrastructure Bank.
The former Liberal Democrat parliamentarian is reported to have been nominate for the role by Chancellor George Osborne.
A spokesman for the Treasury said it did not comment on speculation about appointments to international institutions.
He said: “The UK has been a leading supporter of the AIIB from the outset, playing a significant part in the establishment of the bank, including as the first G7 country to join the bank.”
Both Britain and Germany are to be represented on the new AIIB board.
