An oil analyst with a huge following abruptly closed his social media account causing dismay among his many followers.
Eric Rosenfeldt, who goes by the Twitter handle of oil merchant @energyrosen had attracted more than 8,000 followers for his quirky and candid opinion on the crude oil market.
According to reports, he had previously confirmed his identity to Reuters.
But he deleted his account at the end of last month after a user questioned some of his tweets about crude prices and called him dishonest.
He said his analysis had likely been misinterpreted and decided it was the last straw before deleting his account.
He said: “It was death by a thousand cuts. Then someone said I was dishonest or something like that and I was like, ‘Why am I doing this?”.
On some days, the analyst had received as many as 800 direct messages.
His departure led to calls for him to return to social media.
Former trader Anthony Crudele described Rosenfeldt as a “class act” who had helped traders and investors “learn an aspect of the oil industry that they wouldn’t learn otherwise”.
While the trader is off Twitter for now he did not rule out a return and said he was now thinking “maybe a break” instead of a complete exit.
