US Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump said communities in Colorado should be allowed to determine whether fracking is allowed – despite a ruling in the state which means there can be no ban on shale gas extraction.
The business tycoon was interviewed by a KUSA-TV journalist who asked him for his views on hydraulic fracturing of oil and gas wells.
Trump said fracking was something “we need” adding it was “here, whether we like it or not” before going on to say that he could “understand” if a municipality or state wanted to put a ban in place.
However, it was revealed after the television interview that the Colorado Supreme Court has already ruled fracking bans are not allowed.
Lem Smith, president of the Colorado Petroleum Association, said: “Mr Trump probably isn’t aware that the Colorado Supreme Court has already ruled that fracking bans are not allowed.
“Mr Trump is absolutely correct to say local communities should have a lot of input and the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission does just that.”
In May the Colorado Supreme Court ruled against the cities of Fort Collins and Longmont where residents had called for fracking moratoriums.
