Statoil is taking a county in West Virginia to court over its refusal to refund property tax overpayments totalling £270,000, a news report said.
A Statoil spokesman was quoted as saying a “clerical error” had led to the overpayment.
Marshall County commissioners voted against returning the money in a 2 to 1 decision in June.
County assessor Chris Kessler was cited as saying the administration would hold its ground.
According to the report, he said Statoil should have been able to spot and correct the error in time, and was guilty of negligence for failing to do so.
No hearing dates for the civil case have been set.
