Norwegian oil and gas companies plan to cut CO2 emissions by 2.5 million tonnes on the Norwegian continental shelf (NCS) between 2020 and 2030.
The move is part of plans to slash greenhouse gas emissions and tackle global warming, the Norwegian Oil and Gas Association said today.
Statoil said it would account for 2 million tonnes of the total reduction.
The company previously said it would cut 2008 levels of carbon emissions by 1.2 million tonnes by 2020.
Arne Sigve Nylund, Statoil’s executive vice president for development and production in Norway, said: “In Statoil’s road map for the NCS towards 2030 our goal is to maintain profitable production at the 2015 level.
“In order to succeed as an oil and gas producer in a future low-carbon society we must maintain our leading position as a carbon-efficient producer.
“The efforts we make now will therefore improve our future business opportunities.”
