China has started building its first floating nuclear reactor in a step towards developing the waters off the country’s coast, a news report said.
State-controlled China General Nuclear Power Group plans to deploy the reactor offshore before the end of the decade, Reuters reported.
It will provide power for offshore facilities in China’s open sea, the company said, according to the report.
An international court recently ruled Beijing had no historic claims to most of South China Sea.
Floating reactors were first proposed in the United States in the 1970s, only for the plans to be dropped.
Russia is expected to be the first to demonstrate the technology next year
