A union has claimed the future of fracking “desperately needs examination” after a new shale gas site was given the go-ahead.
The comments come after decision by Nottinghamshire Council to approve an exploratory licence for IGas Energy.
The company has been given permission to drill a well at a former Cold War missile base.
The GMB said it would welcome the opportunity to evaluate whether fracking offers a safe and commercially viable future for the UK energy industry.
Stuart Fegan, national officer GMB, said:”GMB has debated our position on shale gas extraction through our democratic structures laid down by our congress.
“The Nottinghamshire license is the latest to be granted in the UK for companies to see if shale can be extracted in a safe, and commercially viable basis.
“It underlines the need for a serious and meaningful discussion on how shale gas could support the UK’s short and medium term energy needs.”
