The state regulator of oil and gas in Texas said the body has fallen short of its goal to plug almost 900 wells, according to the agency’s Oilfield Cleanup Program annual report.
The Railroad Commission of Texas spent $8.5million plugging hundreds of oil and gas wells this year.
The body is facing the task of plugging thousands of wells which were abandoned by operators when they left the Texas oil patch amid the global downturn.
More than 500 orphan wells were plugged this year.
The agency’s Oilfield Cleanup Program plans to spend around $14million plugging another thousand next year.
