Vattenfall’s Aberdeen Offshore Wind Farm project yesterday announced the installation of the first turbine tower at the site.
The Pacific Orca vessel delivered the turbines to the site where it was lifted out of the sea as the first turbine was affixed to the jacket.
This will be the first of 11 to be installed at the wind development.
Adam Ezzamel, project manager, said: “This is a momentous occasion for our project. It’s the deployment of the world’s most powerful turbines in Aberdeen bay and we’re halfway to the total tip height.”
Sitting nearly 1.5 miles off the Aberdeen coastline, the development will see eleven 191 meter turbines able to operate at 8.4MW.
Capable of powering one household for an entire day in one turn, once finished the development will be capable of delivering 70% of Aberdeen’s total energy demand.
A spokeswoman for the project said that “due to the good weather conditions in Aberdeen” those working on the project would also attempt to fit the turbine and blades before the end of the day.
