A derelict building will be redeveloped to create new headquarters for oil firm EnQuest in Aberdeen.
Councillors unanimously approved plans to turn the former Aberdeen Seafood Park, close to Union Square, into an eight-storey office block and 271-space multistorey car park. It is hoped it will regenerate the area of the city by attracting other businesses to the harbour.
David Heslop, of EnQuest, said: “EnQuest has enjoyed considerable growth since it was established in 2010 and we have been looking at opportunities to relocate from our current sites to larger, bespoke facilities in Aberdeen for some time.”
The site, bounded by Palmerston Road, Raik Road, Poynernook Road and Stell Road, will cover about 120,000sq ft over eight storeys and will be developed by Drum Property Group.
The building will have the capacity to accommodate up to 800 people and will allow the company to consolidate its workforce under one roof.
Graeme Bone, director of the Drum Property Group, said: “It will lead to the physical regeneration of a rundown part of the city and act as a catalyst in generating additional long-term activity for the harbour area and Aberdeen in general.”
A number of public improvements will also be carried out, including the widening of pavements, natural granite slabs and benches and the planting of hornbeam trees. An electric vehicle charging point will also be created.
Councillor Ramsay Milne, convener of the city council’s development management subcommittee, said: “The EnQuest building will make fantastic use of a site which has been lying derelict for some time.”
