US safety chiefs are to launch an investigation after a welder was killed when he fell from a Gulf of Mexico oil platform this week.
Peter Voces died after falling into the Gulf of Mexico while dismantling the Vermillion Block 200 platform off the Louisiana coast.
Voces was part of a derrick barge crew dismantling the Energy Resource Technology platform.
A massive coastguard search was launched after he fell 100ft into the sea when he was knocked off the rick by an empty storage tank, before his body was recovered on Tuesday.
Now the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement is to hold an inquiry to investigate the 38-year-old Filipino’s death.
“My sincerest condolences go out to the family of Mr. Voces,” said BSEE director Brian Salerno.
“We are assembling a panel of experts who will conduct a thorough investigation into this tragic incident. We are committed to a complete investigation to identify the cause of the incident and to identify approaches to enhance the safety of future operations.”
It is the second fatality at an Energy Resource Technology platform in two years. Earlier this year the company also spent days trying to plug a gas leak after an explosion blew out a well in the Gulf.
