Sir Ian Wood has added to his growing collection of lifetime achievement honours by winning the top gong at the Oil Council’s 2014 Awards of Excellence in London.
The former chairman and chief executive of Aberdeen-based energy service company Wood Group was presented with his latest gong in-front of a 1,000-strong audience of top oil and gas bosses from around the world.
A judging panel of 65 industry experts recognised him for his key role in creating one of the world’s top oilfield service firms and his championing of the energy industry.
The award also honoured his acomplishments as a “benchmark” of excellence and source of inspiration and entrepreneurialism, while also paying tribute to his work on the recent Wood Review.
Oil Council chairman Ross Stewart Campbell said the judges were all huge admirers of “Sir Ian’s career and legacy” and the “positivity” he brought to the industry.
Sir Ian, now an adviser to the UK Government, said: “To be recognised by a panel of 65 oil and gas experts and selected for the lifetime achievement award in such a vast global industry is really gratifying and reflects on all the great people I have worked with.”
The Oil Council is a global networking organisation for oil and gas bosses.
Its award to Sir Ian follows similar honours which came his way at this year’s Northern Star Business Awards in Aberdeen, the 2012 Oil and Gas UK Awards and the 2004 National Business Awards for Scotland.
Last year, he was recognised by the Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE) for his outstanding contribution to business and commerce in Scotland.
There is a long list of other awards, a knighthood, honorary degrees and an RSE fellowship to his name.
Sir Ian left Wood Group in autumn 2012 after nearly 50 years in the business he transformed from a fishing firm into a global energy service giant.
He was chairman of the company from 1982-2012 and also served as its chief executive from 1967-2006.
