This footage commemorates the 27th anniversary of the Piper Alpha disaster.
The fateful night, which claimed 167 lives, saw an entire industry mourn and forever changed the course of the North Sea’s safety culture.
Sue Jane Taylor – the artist who created the iconic memorial to those who lost their lives – is behind the short piece. The video, which has attracted more than 10,000 views, prompts viewers to reflect on the 1988 disaster and also examine what is still to be done.
Les Linklater, executive director of Step Change in Safety said: “Piper Alpha affects every offshore worker, even today.
“The same hazards and the same challenges that existed back then still exist today and how we manage them — through strong leadership and engaging the workforce in safety — is crucial in preventing a repeat of that tragedy.”
