An investigation has been launched after a man died falling 10 metres at a gas-to-liquid refinery plant.
Petro SA confirmed a worker died at its refinery in South Africa’s Mossel Bay.
The Inspector of Mines and the Department of Labour have since been called into a government-led investigation for the workplace fatality.
Petro SA is South Africa’s state-owned oil producer.
Chief executive Mapula Modipa said: “At PetroSA strict adherence to safety is sacrosanct and we therefore wish to quickly get to the bottom of how this incident happened, to ensuring we prevent such occurrences in future.
“The man’s family had been informed and were getting support and counselling from the company.”
The 45-year-old man fell during a planned maintenance operation on Saturday.
Modipa added: “As PetroSA we are deeply saddened and our employees are traumatised by the tragic loss of a colleague.
“We will fully co-operate with all investigations into the incident.”
