A vessel carrying 560 metric tons of bunker fuel sank after a collision with a chemical tanker in the Singapore Strait late Wednesday, the city-state’s Maritime and Port Authority or MPA said.
Shipping traffic in the waterway remains undisrupted and there were no signs of any fuel leak, the MPA said in a statement on Thursday.
A total of six crew members from both ships were rescued. Another six are missing. Search and rescue operations continued through the night for the six people, the MPA said. Navigational broadcasts were made to all ships to keep a lookout for the missing crew members, the MPA said.
“While there are currently no reports of any oil spill, MPA has also put on standby anti-pollution craft,” the authority said in a separate e-mailed response to queries.
The freighter “Thorco Cloud,” bearing the Antigua and Barbuda flag, collided with Cayman Islands-registered chemical tanker “Stolt Commitment” in Indonesia waters six nautical miles (11 kilometers) northwest of the Indonesian island of Batam, according to the statement posted by the MPA on a government website.
