Total has named chief executive Patrick Pouyanne as its new chairman.
Pouyanne – who was appointed chief executive in late 2014 to succeed Christophe de Margerie, who died in a plane crash in Moscow – will add the role of chairman on December 19, following the board’s decision to combine the two roles.
Thierry Desmarest, who assumed the chairmanship after de Margerie died, will remain an honorary chairman and board member until May 24, 2016.
Patricia Barbizet, an independent director since 2008, has been appointed to a new role of lead independent director. She will chair the governance and ethics committee.
Pouyanné said: “On behalf of all directors, all of Total’s staff and personally, I would like to express our deepest respect and gratitude to Thierry Desmarest for his unwavering commitment and service to Total.
“I have found his support and advice invaluable in ensuring the transition of the Group’s management, the Board and its committees. Today’s decisions are fully aligned with the company’s commitment to uphold the highest standards of governance.”
