Footage has shown a gas leak which has been erupting from an energy facility in California.
According to reports, more than 1,000 families have been forced to relocate as noxious fumes continue to filter into the air following the natural gas leak at a storage facility in California’s Aliso Canyon.
A video taken earlier this month by an earthworks ITC-certified thermographer has shown the extent of the damage.
The methane plumes have been made visible by a specialised infrared camera.
The video was released by the EDF (Environmental Defence Fund) who describe it as “one of the biggest leaks we’ve ever seen reported”.
Tim O’Connor, director of EDF’s California Oil and Gas program, said: “Events of this size are rare, but major leakage across the oil and gas supply chain is not.
“There are plenty of mini -Aliso Canyons that add up to a big climate problem – not just in California, but across the country.”
