Sir Ian says North Sea industry will survive

Sir Ian Wood insists the North Sea industry is not facing a doomsday scenario and can recover with the help of a big tax cut in the March Budget. The north-east oil and gas doyen said there was little point in swifter action from the Treasury as it would have no impact at current oil prices of about $50 a barrel. But a clear commitment by the chancellor to a “measured” reduction of at least 10% to the supplementary tax on profits in the Budget and more cuts to follow would encourage operators to keep project teams together and not give up on the North Sea, he said.

Repsol pulls out of Canary Island exploration

Spanish oil company Repsol has called off exploratory drilling in the sea around the Canary Islands. It said a discovery of oil and gas had been found but in water-logged subsoil and in small quantities. Around 750 professionals, some based in the Canary Islands, worked on the research project.

Sir Ian Wood: Major tax cut necessary

North Sea oil expert Sir Ian Wood, who led a review of the industry for the Government which reported last year, said a major tax cut was necessary to give producers the confidence to keep their operations going. He said the supplementary charge on profits should be cut from 30% to 20% although he acknowledged that would have little impact in the short-term because prices were so low.

Ed Davey asks OGA chief exec to lead urgent commission on North Sea industry

The Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change has asked the new chief executive of the Oil and Gas Authority (OGA) to lead an urgent commission to identify key risks to oil and gas production in the UKCS. Ed Davey said he had asked Andy Samuel to look at what further measures could be taken to help mitigate the impact of low oil prices and high production costs affecting the industry. The minister made the announcement on a vist to Aberdeen on the same day BP revealed it would be cutting 200 jobs from its North Sea operations and axing 100 contractor roles.

Chancellor praised for North Sea oil tax cuts

The Chancellor showed “considerable foresight” in cutting taxes on North Sea oil ahead of the plunge in commodity prices, William Hague has said. The Commons leader said the dramatic falls in oil prices were good for the economy overall but added the Government took seriously the hit on employment in the sector. BP has announced 300 job losses in Aberdeen where much of its North Sea oil business is based.

Sturgeon: Back oil industry plans

The future of the North Sea oil industry has dominated clashes at Holyrood, with the First Minister urging opposition leaders to give their support to SNP proposals to help the industry in the wake of falling prices. Labour, the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats all pressed Nicola Sturgeon on the impact that prices, which have now dropped below 50 US dollars (£32) a barrel, would have on both the industry and the country. Ms Sturgeon called for an end to “petty political point-scoring” at the same time as she criticised Labour MPs for backing Tory plans for a further round of austerity cuts in a vote at Westminster earlier this week.

Scotland ‘could go all renewable’

Scotland’s electricity system could be powered almost entirely by renewable energy by 2030, according to a report by an environmental charity. WWF Scotland’s report uses independent analysis by an engineering and energy consultancy to test the Scottish Government’s policy to decarbonise the country’s electricity supply over the next 15 years. It found that an electricity system based on “proven renewables and increased energy efficiency” is a credible way of meeting the target.

Russia pumps most oil since Soviet era as sanctions yet to bite

Russian oil production rose to a post-Soviet record last month, showing how pumping of the nation’s biggest source of revenue has so far been unaffected by US and European sanctions or a price collapse for the commodity. The nation increased output 0.3% to 10.667 million barrels a day, according to preliminary data today e-mailed today by CDU-TEK, part of the Energy Ministry. EU rules obesity ‘is a disability’

The European Court of Justice has ruled obesity can constitute a disability. The EU’s highest court was asked to rule on the case of a male childminder in Denmark who said he was sacked for being too fat. The court said that if obesity could hinder “full and effective participation” at work then it could count as a disability.
