“With our European neighbours we could have a pipeline of green hydrogen to provide a clean fuel stock to German industry and coming back the other way carbon to the UK [for storage],” he said.

For Hyphen, the opportunity is in Europe and Asia, specifically Japan and South Korea. These markets have set targets to shift to hydrogen, but have limited domestic capacity to produce their own supplies.
“We also expect production of hydrogen in the USA on account of the Inflation Reduction Act [IRA], and this surely supports the plausibility of the hydrogen import target – as long as US and EU can make concessions to each other,” the Topsoe executive said.
The challenge over the next 10 years will be in scaling up SAF production. Green hydrogen production is relatively niche, as yet. “A lack of green power and electrolysis capacity, this will not make a dent” in the projected SAF demand.
Cepsa said the sale was intended to allow it to focus on its Positive Motion strategy. This will make Cepsa a leader in sustainable mobility, biofuels and green hydrogen in Spain and Portugal, it said.
The MoU today demonstrates that “not only are we are strengthening our energy security and lowering bills for consumers in the long term, we’re unlocking huge opportunities for investment in British expertise and jobs in the process”.
